Would you do... Ruffles?

A fall trend that I've seen subtly creeping up everywhere is ruffles. Reviewers who have bought the Anthropologie dress below have stated that the ruffles are extremely flattering, and that they hide certain areas that they want hidden. Personally, I love this dress, in grey and black. I'd totally wear it out with my hair pulled back to show off the sheer neckline. But the ruffles? I'm not usually a ruffle person. Plus while this dress may be flattering, I'm not sure if ruffles are flattering overall. I think it depends on the garment shape itself. What do you guys think?

I am really on the fence about this top. I think it could be super cute and flattering on some people, but it could be a hot mess on others. I wish every clothing site allowed people to review- it would make purchasing online a lot easier!

I like this Free People top, but I think it's kind of too long. Again, I think it would look best on the correct body type, but who knows? I could be missing something here when it comes to ruffles and they could be the end of all of our problems (or problem areas.)

Or you could always play it safe and go easy on the ruffles. Like with this gorgeous dress by Juicy Couture (I can't believe I just said "gorgeous" and "Juicy Couture" in the same sentence...)

So far my favorite is the Anthropologie dress, but I'm not sure I buy into the whole ruffles trend. I keep thinking back to Project Runway a few episodes back, where Nicolas repeatedly stated that "ruffles were created to hide flaws." But there's really nothing wrong with that, right?

So who's going to rock the ruffles this fall?

  1. Ruffles CAN be flattering, but I think you have to be careful because they can add volume to areas where you might not want to draw the eye-- I'm especially selfconscious about my poochy tums. :)

  2. I'm a huge fan of ruffles. I think they give a touch of retro femininity. I don't have enough pieces with ruffles.

  6. I like ruffles. I think they add a touch of femininity that can be sweet. However, that Juicy Couture dress is just wrong. No one should have ruffles coming out of their armpits (looks like ruffly hair).

The Anthropology dress is still my fav!

  11. I'm definitely not 100% on the ruffle train--it is definitely about the whole garment and the ruffles...

  12. i am fond of ruffles but on others. you are absolutely right ruffles can fatten or flatter depending upon the piece. i have tried ruffled tops which i find less flattering, on the other hand a well structured dress can may be give you a great silhouette

  13. I'm careful with ruffles as well. I know people either hate or love them, but like you, a lot depends on the cut and also on the person wearing them. I'm sure some dresses are more flattering if you have a certain body shop (much like empire line dresses). I like both dresses pictured here. The white top looks pretty unflattering in the picture, but it's also due to the cut, not just the ruffles themselves.

  15. I am sooo wary of ruffles, but I bought the cutest prom dress with ruffles on (it's on my blog somehwere!) And I loved it. There are a few cute ruffled dresses in h&m, great if you don't want to spend too much, and that way you can try them on, as ruffles are very difficult to get right I think. thanks for commenting my blog and so sorry it's taken so long to get back to you, uni is so hectic! www.dazedyoungmess.blogspot.com
